Students registered in an Honours or General Arts academic plan can choose to major in Legal Studies at the end of 1st year. There are several ways to major in Legal Studies. Whatever way you choose, we encourage you to select your courses in consultation with your academic advisor/s.
If you choose the Legal Studies Four-Year Honours Academic Plan, you will be required to successfully complete a minimum of 20 course units, including Faculty of Arts Group A and B requirements with an overall cumulative average of at least 60% and a cumulative average of at least 75% in Legal Studies core and approved courses.
You can also choose a Joint Honours academic plan with Legal Studies along with another Honours academic plan, or you may combine Honours Legal Studies with Arts and Business (Co-op or Regular). If you choose the Legal Studies Four-Year General Major Academic Plan, you will be required to successfully complete a minimum of 20 academic course units including Faculty of Arts Group A and B requirements with an overall cumulative average of at least 60% and a cumulative average of at least 70% in Legal Studies core and approved courses.
You choose to specialize in
Financial Regulation. This specialization is unique
to the University of Waterloo, as we are the only Canadian University to
offer such a program.
An option is a specific combination or grouping of courses which emphasizes a particular area of study. If you choose to complete an option, the name of that option appears on your degree when you graduate.
To complete the Legal Studies and Criminology Option, you need to complete 10 term courses, 5 from the Legal Studies section and 5 from the Criminology section with a cumulative average of at least 65%.
The Legal Studies courses are divided into Parts A and B. You must complete at least 2 courses from Part A and at least 2 courses from Part B.
The Criminology courses are also divided into Parts A and B. You must complete at least 2 courses from Part A and at least 2 courses from Part B.
