About Arts
If anything, scholarship in the humanities, social sciences, and the fine arts is needed more than ever. Just look at the front pages of any major newspaper or watch any newscast and you will quickly realize that most of the major problems facing society today cannot be fully grasped without an appreciation of the social, political, cultural or economic contexts in which we live and dream.
- Douglas Peers, Dean of Arts
The Faculty of Arts - from ideas to practice
Waterloo Arts is home to an outstanding range of disciplines in social sciences, humanities, languages, fine and performing arts, business, accounting and finance. With over 7,500 current students and more than 40,000 alumni living and working all over the world, Arts makes a difference.
Learning
Our 15 departments along with our schools, affiliated colleges and the Stratford Campus collectively offer over 30 undergraduate majors with 425 degree options and 37 distinct graduate programs. We encourage all our students to make connections between disciplines, between cultures, and between theory and practice.
Research and teaching
We have over 240 full-time faculty members dedicated to an exceptional range of research activity and teaching. As a collective force, Arts faculty share and instill knowledge, creativity and critical-thinking skills. With more than 95% of our professors holding PhDs, our students learn from some of the best minds in the country.
Experience
Beyond the classroom, we offer the largest arts co-op education program in the world, as well as experiential learning, international exchange and outreach opportunities. Arts students graduate as engaged citizens with a strong understanding of real-world issues and diverse global perspectives – and of their own potential to contribute.
Arts and community
Our faculty is rich with connections and partnerships. Many initiatives and achievements of Arts are shared with the four university colleges, the Waterloo Stratford Campus, the Balsillie School of International Affairs, and with numerous research centres. We continuously expand our community reach by partnering with private, public and non-profit organizations to ensure a two-way transfer of knowledge between the university and 'the real world'.
