Resources and opportunities for graduate students

The university offers many resources for graduate students that support academic, practical and career needs. Here are a few key opportunities you should know about. Also, find more links to helpful resources below.

 

Academic Integrity Workshop
All incoming graduate students in the Faculty of Arts are required to participate in an Academic Integrity Workshop. Scheduled during Orientation Week every September, the workshop provides a review and explanation of uWaterloo policies for academic integrity. Your home department will advise you of the date and location of the workshop.

Research centres, institutes and groups
There is an ever-growing number of research centres in, or affiliated with, Arts. Research centres present another excellent resource for you to engage with Waterloo’s academic community, from participating in research projects to attending events and presentations.

Centre for Teaching Excellence
The Centre for Teaching Excellence (CTE) offers free workshops for graduate students who work as Teaching Assistants and Lecturers. The Centre also offers the Certificate in University Teaching program to all Waterloo PhD candidates.

Waterloo Graduate Student Research Conference
Taking place each April, the Grad Student Conference is an interdisciplinary, university-wide event that offers you great opportunity to present your research in a professional conference setting to other graduate students and faculty – and to learn about the work of your colleagues across campus.

Centre for Career Action - sessions and advice for grad students
An excellent resource to help you prepare for the work force, whether in academia or not. The Centre for Career Action offers free seminars and information on topics such as: Teaching philosophy statement; Writing CVs and cover letters; Interview skills for academic positions; Successfully negotiating academic job offers; Careers beyond academia; Project management; Leadership as a bridge to employment; Non‐academic work search and networking.

Waterloo’s Intellectual Property Policy #73
“Everything you discover at Waterloo belongs to you.” This homepage slogan refers, in part, to the university’s IP policy. Unlike many other universities in Canada, graduate students and faculty at Waterloo retain rights to the intellectual property they develop at the university.

Graduate Studies Endowment Fund
Grad students at uWaterloo can submit funding proposals to the Graduate Studies Endowment Fund for initiatives that enhance the learning, research, and overall experience of graduate students. Examples of funded projects include improvements to graduate student common space, academic events organized by graduate students, and improvement of physical and electronic resources for graduate students.The Graduate Studies Office has complete graduate awards information.

External funding sources for graduate students
Application deadlines for external awards are typically in early fall. Speak with the graduate scholarship coordinator in your home department about the application procedures.
