Prospective Majors Chart - for students admitted to Fall 2012

Most students plan to choose a major at the end of their first year. This chart will help you select your first-year courses.
Your first year is meant to be exploratory and you’re expected to choose a variety of courses. Students usually take 5 courses a term in first year.
Arts and Business students must take ARBUS 101; ECON 101; a language course; ARBUS 100 (non-credit seminar) in Fall; and ARBUS 102 in Winter in addition to the prospective major courses listed below.

  3. If you are in Honours Arts and Business co-op, you cannot select this major.
  4. MUSIC 116 and 117 are worth 0.25 unit credit and can be take as the 6th course in each term. MUSIC 116, 117, and 226 require an audition. Contact the Music department prior to the first day of class.
  5. If you have not taken 4U Advanced Functions and Introductory Calculus or 4U Calculus and Vectors you should take MATH 104 in your first year. This may mean that you will have to take ECON 211 in your second year. Arts and Business students interested in Economics should take ECON 211 in second year. Mathematical Economics does not require ECON 211, but 4U Calculus is a pre-requisite for MATH 127. Consult the Mathematical Economics requirement list for further information.
  6. GER 201 and 203 are designed to be taken concurrently, as are GER 202 and 204. See course description notes for details.
  7. This major is also a first year entry program. Contact mjcrusoe [at] uwaterloo [dot] ca (Renison Registrar) for more information. Arts and Business students  should take: SOC 120R and PSYCH 121R in Fall; SOCWK 120R, SDS 131R and SDS 150R in Winter (in addition to required Arts and Business courses)
  8. If you plan to major in English or History you may only count two 100-level courses toward your major requirements.
  9. If you plan to major in Peace and Conflict Studies, you should also consider taking either PSYCH 101 or SOC 101 in first year. They are pre-requisite for all upper year PSYCH or SOC courses. PSCI 110 is an approved PACS course that counts toward the major.
