Phil 110: Papers and Quizzes

You are required to do two papers and two quizzes. The due date of the first paper is variable (see below). The second paper is due June 5, 1998. The quizzes will be on May 27, 1998 (10%) and June 5, 1998 (15%). Both quizzes will be multiple choice and short answer. See the syllabus for late/absence policies.

Paper 1

The first paper will be a 'translation' and criticism exercise on a passage in the text. You may select from the passages in the table below, but there can only be one student per passage. Passages are assigned on a first come first served basis. This paper should be 5-7 pages (1200-1800 words) and should consist in two parts 1) a detailed explanation of the passage's meaning and 2) a brief discussion of at least one flaw or strength of the argument. You should try to focus on clearly explaining the main points and arguments of the passage. You should write your paper for an audience that is not taking the course to whom you must explain the selection.

Paper 2

The second paper will be a philosophy paper on a topic covered in the course (other topics are possible, please discuss them with me). Please read the appendix (pp. 425-444) in the text for information regarding how to write philosophy papers. Feel free to make an appointment with me to discuss your paper or topic.

I would like each student to have a paper topic which I have approved by May 29th.

Quizzes

Quizzes will be at least two-thirds multiple choice with the remaining part short answer. These quizzes should be easy if you have read the assigned material. Here are some sample questions.

If you have any questions, feel free to email me at chris@twinearth.wustl.edu.
