Searching for Leith ...may ancestor Commodore James Grierson we now believe sailed with Nelson during several key battles including Trafalgar. Then in the early 1830's, at 35 years of age he immigrated with his wife Elizabeth Taylor to pioneer 800 acres he was granted on the Ottawa River upstream from soon to be Ottawa be some 15 miles or so. We believe that his roots may well be in Leith or Edinburgh surrounds and so we search in preparation for our visit with my mother Kathleen Grierson Salter in Mid May this year. Thank you for glimpses and views of antiquity.

I stumbled across your site whilst looking for somewhere else and was astonished to see a photograph of my sister,Nanette. She is shown on the second row of the 1939 class and as soon as I leave this site I will e-mail her with the details. She is now in California.
I left P7 in 1939 when I was evacuated to Carron in Morayshire on 2/9/39 and have never returned. Others in my class were Eleanor Burns, Bobbie Strachan, Vi Porteous, David Langley, Alec Hetherington, Peter Halliday and my teacher was Miss Semple. I would like to hear from any one who remembers me.
Thanks for running such an interesting site. Bill Owens.

My name is also Elspeth. If you haven't met many you don't travel in the proper circles. The editor of wallyweb is my cousin and just one of the many Elspeth's in the family. As far as I remember there are five in the Scottish side and I think my cousin is doing a great job bringing together the various members of our great family. If you haven't seen Scotland yet then you must make the effort which, believe me, it is well worth the visit. Our family has a long historic line and if you keep in touch thro wallyweb you will pick up some very interesting information. All the best to Canada. Elspeth Baillie Meldrum.

I grew up in Stockbridge 35-45 years ago and finding your pictures raised many
fond memories. Stockaree, as everyone called it, was a big village really, full
of many varied characters. I cn't believe how many of the places I knew so well
are shown, and how little they seem to have changed. I lived in St Stephens St,
with vivid memories of the bells of the church up the hill ringing out. I may
only be 400 miles away, but it has been a pretty effective barrier to revisiting
it. You have made me resolve to drag my family up with or without their willing
consent!

St. Stephens Church, Edinburgh:For instance, the support pole for the golden
angel weathervane on Guildford Cathedral is actually a mobile mast and supports
several antennas. In return for using the site, which sits on a hilltop and is
a coveted location, the angel was regilded. More complicated was St Stephen's
church in Edinburgh. This houses eight mobile antennas sitting behind fibreglass
panels in its belfry. The panels forming corner pillars were painted to resemble
the surrounding brickwork This is disgusting in view of the fact that these masts
will in future be used as a means of covert control.
