Introduction: How to Use This Bibliography

This Bibliography is offered in support of Classical Studies 373, The Fall of the Roman Empire, an undergraduate course taught at the University of Waterloo both oncampus and in the distance mode. Not all books listed here will be available at the University of Waterloo Library; most will, but the list is meant to give a wide range of choices to those students using a variety of other libraries, and to those who are able to read this notice, a variety of online resources.

Instructions on how to consult and use the University of Waterloo Library as a Distance Education student are addressed in the course packet and the Distance Education Calendar. If you wish you may consult the University of Waterloo Library online, and click on Watcat, the Online Catalogue to search for a particular title at Waterloo and you can also search library catalogues elsewhere in Canada. If you need more help at Waterloo you may consult Christine Jewell, the representative for Classical Studies.

There is an increasing amount of material coming online which is not readily available elsewhere; hopefully those who can will take advantage of it. I discuss the Online Resources generally and for the individual lectures at Optional and Additional Resources for Classical Studies 373.

Primary Sources: The Greek and Latin Authors

Loeb Classical Library, available in university libraries and some public libraries, is a series of Greek and Latin texts accompanied by a full translation in English, and often useful introduction and notes. The original language appears on the left page, the translation on the right. Published authors relative to the late antique period are:

Ammianus Marcellinus; St. Augustine; Ausonius; St. Basil; Eusebius; Julian; Boethius; Libanius; Philostratus; Procopius; Prudentius; St. Jerome; Sidonius Apollinaris.

Penguin is a well-known paperback and mass market publisher. Delivery is fairly speedy from the publisher if one wishes to order from a local bookstore. Published authors relative to the late antique period are:

Ammianus Marcellinus, St. Augustine, Eusebius, Boethius, Gregory of Tours

In addition, there are often older translations of authors available in many public libraries and used bookstores, and there are some modern ones not in the above series which may be found in libraries. If you have internet access many Christian and some of the pagan authors are available online and can be downloaded, for free. Almost all of the Christian authors have been translated but this is not true for pagan authors. When reading the Christian authors please be advised that until relatively recently translators often felt it their Christian duty to 'clean up' the elements in the ancient author which were not in accordance with the theological opinion the translator held, or his denomination held.

Nota Bene: If you are considering reading an ancient author for your essay please let me know, particularly if you have never read an ancient author before. You might like some suggestions on how to handle things like names, the author's viewpoint (many ancient authors had a particular ax to grind), and so on.

Books on the Roman world will usually be found in the 937 section of public libraries, or the DG section of university libraries. Primary sources (ancient authors in translation) are largely located in the 870's or the PA section. Sometimes it's just worth an afternoon's browsing time to see what one can find.

It is probably easiest to purchase books from your local bookstore, but if not, you may wish to inquire at the University of Waterloo Bookstore.
