Songs for My Mother Concerts, 2017

Songs for My Mother by Carol Ann Weaver, is a song cycle with texts by Miriam L. Weaver, ranging from her early days in the 1940s in Appalachian Kentucky, to moments before her untimely death. The sense of her working in primitive physical settings and creating home, friendships, and community are, themselves, a saga. Her accounts of Hard Shell Baptist practices are as vivid and cogent as those of any ethnomusicologist! The songs, Feedsack Curtains, Flat Iron and Hard Shell Baptists recount these early years. Lately Sprung rejoices at the birth of her granddaughter, while Crossing Over and To the End present chillingly honest looks into a death about to occur, but with a hue of hope. The premiere, June 24, 2017 with Marge Maust, mezzo, and Carol Ann Weaver, piano, took place at Eastern Mennonite University within the Crossing the Lines Conference. Subsequent performances are planned October, 16, 17, 18, 2017 at CMU, UWinnipeg, and UManitoba in Winnipeg, Manitoba; October 25, 2017 at University of Waterloo and Nov. 30, 2017 at Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo, Ontario.

Parry Sounding Concert, 2017

Parry Sounding by Carol Ann Weaver, commissioned by Brenda Muller and the Riversong Festival in Parry Sound, captures sounds, moods and energies both from Georgian Bay, and also from natural arueas in South Africa. Scored for choir and string orchestra, the work consists of 8 movements: Soul Dance, Dawn Chorus, Leaping Impala, West Wind, Soaring Bateleur (Eagle), African Night, The Blessing, and Georgian Bay. The work was premiered by the Whispering River Choir and Orchestra, conducted by Catherine Maguire, with Brenda Muller, solo cellist, at St. James Community Centre, Parry Sound, Ontario, June 17, 2017.

The Blessing Concerts, 2017

The Blessing, 2012/2017 for soprano saxophone and string orchestra, performed by Ukrainian Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Mykola Diadiura, with Gaetano Di Bacco, saxophonist, in Kiev, Ukraine at the Opera Theatre of Kiev, May 20, 2017; and also scored for solo cello and string orchestra at Parry Sound, June 2017, Whispering River Orchestra with Brenda Muller, cello. The Blessing was composed for and in support of Lydia Herrle of Waterloo County, Ontario.

Earth Peace Concerts, 2016-2017

Earth Peace by Carol Ann Weaver, composed and compiled in South Africa and Namibia during 2015-2016, tells global stories of conflict, pain, resolution and joy, allowing humans to be in dialogue with and learn from creatures in the natural world.  All of us are part of the earth; so global peacemaking involves humans and the natural world.  Choral pieces respond with mostly Latin Mass texts and English lyrics by CAW, while the string quartet plays short reflections.  The writings, obtained from those who answered a call for Earth Peace stories, represent many troubled regions of the globe. Each writer is identified by name; their writings, used by permission, occur in this order: Ann Hostetler, Gus and Margie Mills, Harold Miller, Jennifer Ball, Dorothy Jean Weaver, Reina Neufeldt, Charity Schellenberg, Dave Klassen, Faith Eides and CAWeaver.  Earth Piece was premiered at UWaterloo at the Global Mennonite Peacebuilding Conference and Festival on June 9, 2016, with subsequent and upcoming performances in Parry Sound, Waterloo, Kitchener, Edmonton, and elsewhere.

Earth Voices Tour, 2015

Earth Voices MWC

Earth Voices Tour, 2015

Earth Voices, a performance piece by Carol Ann Weaver for readers, soundscape, and visuals, features words about the earth by 24 Mennonite writers from North and South America, Middle East, and Africa. The soundscape (Carol's on-site field recordings and compositional collages) and visuals (original and submitted photography) frame and synergize with spoken word. The work has a special African section, including African singing and spoken word from several Congolese Mennonite women pastors and other African workers, each speaking about the earth. This piece seeks to find voices which can lead us into a deeper knowledge of the earth and our relationship to it. Writers include: Rudy Wiebe, Julia Kasdorf, Jean Janzen, Ann Hostetler, Sarah Klassen, David Waltner-Toews, and many others. Fresno Pacific University in Mennonite/s Writing Conference, March 13, 2015 (premiere); Goshen College IN, April 9, 2015; Mennonite World Conference, Harrisburg, PA, July 23, 2015; Conrad Grebel/UWaterloo, Sept. 16, 2015.

2013 Paraguay Primeval CD Manitoba concerts!

1. Thursday, Jan. 10, 2013, 11:30AM Laudamus Auditorium, CMU, Winnipeg : PARAGUAY PRIMEVAL Rebecca Campbell, vocals; CAWeaver, piano

This music by Carol stems from a recent trip to Paraguay, and an ongoing collection of stories about these remarkable Mennonite settlers who found new "Promised Land" in the Chaco. Moving there in 1920s from Western Canada, later joined by those fleeing Stalinist Russia, these Mennonite settlers eventually changed a "Green Hell" into a thriving "Green Heaven," luring back many indigenous people to this arid, challenging landscape. The work bristles with jazz riffs, a tango (in case they may have danced in spite of themselves!), a lament for one family which died from typhus, a song for the women's village, a humourous song about the lithe indigenous women, a song for Uncle Hans who survived being lowered into a well, and more. Texts are derived from works by Rudy Wiebe (Blue Mountains of China), Dora Dueck (Under the Still Standing Sun), and Schonebrunn Chronicles translated from original Paraguayan colonists' writings by Henry and Esther Regehr. (CD Cover photo by Hans Hildebrandt). Proceeds from sales will go to MCC work among indigenous people in the Chaco, Paraguay.
