Course Description:

 

This introductory course is designed to develop basic skills in academic writing. The course will cover the processes of expository and argumentative writing, as well as the fundamentals of grammar and academic style. Through reflective writing, workshops, and discussion, we will explore three genres of professional writing. The course is designed to allow you to carry these skills over to any academic course of study.

 

Course Objectives:

 

This course will strengthen your ability to:

á      recognize and organize evidence for an argument

á      develop a strong, coherent thesis from that evidence

á      argue that thesis with convincing, documented evidence in clear, elegant, scholarly prose.

 

Course Texts:

 

á      The Norton Field Guide to Writing, 4th Ed.

á      A Practical English Grammar, ed. Thomson and Martinet (free online)

á      Photocopies (provided in class)

 

The Norton Field Guide is available at the UW Bookstore (SCH).

The website is required reading. You are responsible for all information posted on the course website.
